TRUCKEE, Calif. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- The Truckee Police Department has confirmed that an explosion on Wednesday was the result of drug manufacturing.

According to a press release, the Truckee Police and Fire Departments responded to a report of an explosion in a house in the Ponderosa Palisades subdivision just after 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. They found a male, 54-year-old Douglas Hall, with burns to his face and hands. Witnesses said Hall was trying to hide items from the explosion as units were arriving. Also on scene were Hall's girlfriend and young child, who had been in the house at the time of the explosion. The house suffered extensive damage from the blast.

Investigation has revealed the blast was the result of a Butane Honey Oil (BHO) extraction process that went awry. Hall said he was using Butane to extract THC from marijuana, when the fumes ignited at the water heater. A search of the residence revealed over 1,000 empty cans of Butane, a highly flammable chemical solvent used in the manufacturing of Hash or Honey Oil, sometimes also called Butter, Wax, or Dabs because of its yellowish waxy appearance. In addition, officers located finished product with a street value of $1200 to $1500 dollars. They also located several pounds of marijuana that was waiting to be processed.

"The medical marijuana community might not like or agree with the analogy, but BHO is to Marijuana what Crack is to Cocaine" said Captain Rob Leftwich. "Putting the debate about medical use aside, there is no argument that the BHO extraction process is incredibly dangerous to everyone in the household. The truly disturbing trend is the growing number of teens and young adults who use BHO. Using vape pens and a use called 'dabbing' is becoming common place and if those users start manufacturing their own BHO, this very scary trend will continue."

Hall was arrested for Possession of Concentrated Cannabis, Manufacturing Controlled Substances with Chemicals, and Felony Child Endangerment. He was booked at the Wayne Brown Facility in Nevada City. Hall admitted to manufacturing and selling the Hash Oil to Cannabis Clubs in the San Francisco area.

If you have any information related to this case specifically, contact Sgt. Robert Womack at 530-550-2335. If you have any specific concerns or information about BHO processing, contact the Truckee Police Department immediately and ask to speak with an officer.
