ELKO, Nev. (AP) — An Elko County public defender has been appointed county court master handling family and juvenile cases.
Andrew Mierins was hired as public defender in 2007 and has handled all the office's juvenile cases for more than a year.
In his new job, he'll preside over juvenile detention hearings and juvenile drug court as well as child welfare cases, family drug court, child support and protective order hearings.
Mierins is filling the vacancy created when Court Master Mason Simons was elected in November to serve as Elko Township Justice of the Peace.
He'll serve beneath the two district judges who selected him for the post, Al Kacin and Nancy Porter.
