ELKO, Nev. (AP) -- A 27-year-old Elko man has been arrested for allegedly running into a sheriff's deputy with his vehicle.

Elko County Sheriff Jim Pitts says the deputy was checking on a car sitting in a residential area about 1:30 a.m. Thursday when a man in the back seat jumped behind the wheel and hit the accelerator.

The deputy was knocked to the ground but not seriously hurt.

Responding officers caught up with the suspect after a brief pursuit.

Pitts told the Elko Daily Free Press that Mark M. Tucker was booked into the county jail on charges of failure to yield to an emergency level, battery on a protected person and driving without a valid license.
