RENO, Nev (KRNV & MyNews4.com) – Sources tell News 4 that embattled Assemblyman Steven Brooks attempted to purchase a firearm from the Scheels sporting goods store in the Legends at Sparks shopping center. The source adds that Brooks’ purchase of the firearm was delayed.
News 4 has also learned Brooks (D-Las Vegas) now has at least a temporary residence in Washoe County. It appears that Brooks has taken residence in Washoe County to avoid being close other lawmakers that have court ordered restraining orders against the Assemblyman.
Carson City Sheriff Ken Ferlong tells News 4 on February 14th Assemblyman Steven Brooks was served two protective orders out of the Justice Court in Carson City, for Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick and Assembly Majority Leader William Horne. He was served at his temporary home in Carson City.
While attempting to serve the order court officials became nervous and called Carson City Sheriff Deputies for assistance. Furlong tells News 4 Brooks then got into a verbal altercation with Deputies when they arrived.
Furlong says Brooks left Carson City that night and now has a temporary residence in the Reno/Sparks area.
After hearing of Brooks' attempt to purchase a firearm, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office was on alert in case Brooks attempted to come back to Carson City.
Sheriff Furlong says everything now is at a steady pace and calm in Carson City. The Sheriff’s Office is attempting monitor all of Brooks’ activities.
Sources tell To The Point host Anjeanette Damon the Assemblyman was kicked out of the Johnny Rockets restaurant inside the Grand Sierra Resort six days before he attempted to purchase the firearm. Brooks tells Damon he was recognized because of the "bad press" he's been getting, and was told to leave.
Brooks has been banned from the legislative building and is on paid administrative leave until a select committee hears evidence on whether he is fit to serve in the legislature.
Brooks was arrested February 10 in Las Vegas on suspicion of physically attacking a family member, then grabbing for an officer's weapon.
He was also arrested January 20th in Las Vegas after allegedly threatening then Democratic Speaker-elect Marilyn Kirkpatrick.
