ELKO, Nev. (AP) — Eureka County Commissioner Patrick Dempsey has died.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports Dempsey died on Saturday after recently being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

A Republican, Dempsey was elected to the District 3 seat in November when he defeated incumbent Mike Page with 58 percent of the vote. His age was not immediately available.

Dempsey was a Reno native who had ranched for 50 years and also owned a construction firm. He is survived by his wife, Julie.

Eureka County Assessor Mike Mears, a member of the county's GOP Central Committee, said Dempsey will be missed. He said his death was "very quick, very sad."

The central committee will compile a list of recommended persons to fill the vacant seat and Gov. Brian Sandoval ultimately will make the appointment.
