U.S. SENATOR HELLER RELEASES THIS STATEMENT ON MARVEL'S PASSING:

“With the passing of John Marvel, Nevada has lost a great man and well-respected public servant. John was kind enough to be both a friend and advisor to me when we served in the State Assembly together, and I remain grateful for his kindness. Both Lynne and I are keeping John’s wife, family and friends in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

GOV. BRIAN SANDOVAL RELEASES A STATEMENT ON MARVEL'S PASSING:

“John Marvel was a friend and mentor to me when I served with him in the Legislature. A son of Battle Mountain, John was a fierce advocate for rural issues and a leader in the Legislature. Nevada is stronger because of John’s service and I extend my condolences to John’s wife, Willie, and his children.”

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Former longtime northern Nevada Assemblyman John Marvel has died at the age of 86.

Marvel's son, John E. Marvel, confirms his father died Saturday at a hospital in Carson City. He says he had battled through a variety of health problems over the past six years, including lung disease.

John Sr. served in the Nevada legislature for 26 years until his retirement in 2005. The Battle Mountain Republican was known for his conservative politics and defense of farmers and ranchers in Humboldt and Lander Counties.

In his later years, his district was stretched all the way west to Washoe County to include part of Sparks. In 2003, he was among a handful of Republicans who crossed party lines to break a seven-week impasse over taxes and public school funding.
