CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The federal agency that oversees Medicaid and Medicare compliance has put Nevada on notice of "serious deficiencies" at a Las Vegas psychiatric hospital following reports of patients being improperly discharged.

An April 25 letter from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, first reported by The Sacramento Bee and obtained Friday by The Associated Press, gave Nevada 10 days to correct problems in its mental health discharge policies at Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital or risk loss of federal funding.

The move follows an investigation launched by the Bee after a patient at Rawson-Neal was put on bus alone and taken to Sacramento where he knew no one. The newspaper then reviewed bus ticket receipts dating to 2008 and found the hospital had transported about 1,500 patients to other states.

It is important to note that Nevada, like every other state, has a Protection and Advocacy agency that has broad powers to inspect and advocate and litigate these issues, not to mention somewhere around a half million dollars and a federal mandate to do so. The Governor appoints members to the Board of this agency:Nevada Disability Advocacy and Law Center. This agency is charged with ensuring this kind of thing never happens, or is litigated long before its this bad. I would bet they were either oblivious or complacent. The governor should clean up that agency as well.
