Fire crews have extinguished a Waste Management garbage truck that was fully engulfed in fire in the 1500 block of Squirreltail Drive, near Disc Drive in Sparks.

At 10:55am, Sparks firefighters arrived to find a garbage truck, owned by Waste Management, on fire. According to crews at the scene, The vehicle’s cab, engine compartment, and the refuge located in the compaction compartment were all on fire. Hydraulic oil or diesel fuel had escaped from the vehicle’s saddle tanks.  The fuel/oil had run approximately 100 yards downhill in the gutter and was also on fire and appeared to have entered a storm drain.

Because of the close proximity to homes and parked vehicles, and also because of the volume and movement of fire, firefighters called for additional resources. Nineteen fire personnel responded, including a Battalion Chief, four structure engines, one truck company, two safety officers and a fire investigator. The fire was under control within 10 minutes of the fire department’s arrival.

The fire completely destroyed the garbage truck and a car parked in a driveway nearby also sustained heat damage. The City of Sparks Environmental Control division responded to the scene to determine the extent of and to control the spread of contamination in the storm drain system.

There were no injuries to firefighters at the scene or the occupants of the Waste Management garbage truck. The fire is currently under investigation with the cause not yet determined.
