RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- Nevadans are mourning the loss of former Nevada Assembly Speaker Joe Dini.

Dini's record career affected thousands of Nevadans. He is being remembered by several politicians, friends and family after his death on Thursday. Many say he was a true gentleman and will be truly missed.

"Everyone's whose lives were touched by Joe Dini is feeling a deep loss today," said former Assemblywoman Shield Leslie.

Joe Dini left a lasting impression in the Silver State. The Yerington Democrat was elected to the Assembly in 1967. He served a record eight times leading the lower chamber in the Nevada Legislature.

His career through 2002 made him the longest serving Assemblyman in Nevada history. "He was a mentor to me like he was to countless other politicians, Democratic politicians in particular over the years." remembered Leslie. "I have nothing but the greatest respect for the man."

Sheila Leslie served under Dini during her first term beginning in 1998. "He was always very enthusiastic about my political activities and saying go out and there fight for us and I'm going to miss that."

Joe Dini's son George said his dad had a long and wonderful career as a politician in Nevada, and worked hard to make our state great. "Joe had more priorities in life. His faith, his family, his friends, and the state. That's how I will remember him."

George Dini also says his dad had a passion for what he was doing and did it well, and Leslie believes Joe's biggest legacy was working to create a better state for everyone. "No one loved Nevada more than Joe Dini."

Governor Brian Sandoval praised Dini as a legend and one of Nevada's greatest statesmen.

Joe Dini passed away at the age of 85.
