RENO, Nev. ( & KRNV) -- The Chamber is canceling the daytime portion of the annual star spangled Sparks event.

The event usually runs from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and offered hot air balloon rides, a boat regatta, the "Sparks got Talent" competition and food and games for the family.

Sparks Mayor Geno Martini says the reports claiming the City pulled funding for the event are false.

"They never approached us for any kind of funding. They didn't want to do that event this year because they were losing money. Had they come to us, wanted to do the event, we would have helped them out," Martini said.

The Chamber has been the event producer for the daytime events at the Sparks Marina during the Star Spangled Sparks festivities. The City of Sparks’ Tourism & Marketing Committee has provided funding in previous years, as have other sponsors.

This year, the Chamber did not request funding from the City for the Star Spangled Sparks daytime event and had previously decided that it would not hold the event, Adam Mayberry said.
