UPDATE - 6/14/13 - 10:44AM - The incident happened in the area of 21st and Prater Way.
Police says the occupants of a blue Ford Explorer were flashing gang signs at a group of juveniles that were on foot. The passengers of the vehicle appeared to be adults and at one point one of the occupants got out of the vehicle with a crowbar. Sources say the males in the Explorer were known gang members and that one of the subjects was "Diablo."
It is well known by the Sparks Police Department that Diablo is the nickname of Luis Grajeda, a well known violent gang member. Officers checked the area of 21st and Prater and were unable to locate a group on foot or the Ford Explorer.
A few minutes later, an officer located a blue Ford Explorer at the 7-11 store located at 250 Pyramid. While the officer was making contact with the occupants of the vehicle, a male subject ran from officers. The officers chased the subject toward I-80 and saw him take a handgun from his waistband and throw it. The officers also saw him throw a clear baggie as well. The subject then ran back toward the 7-11 and North on Pyramid Way. Another officer saw the subject throw another baggie. The baggies contained what was believed to be Methamphetamine and the gun was a 5-shot revolver.
Just as the subject crossed 7th St, an officer deployed his Taser just as the subject was met by a Sparks Police K-9 and was subsequently taken into custody.
The subject was identified as Luis Grajeda. Grajeda was transported to Northern Nevada Medical for the treatment of some minor dog bites. Grajeda was then transported to the Washoe County Jail where he was booked without further incident.
