MINDEN, Nev. (AP) — A Gardnerville man who admitted shooting dozens of bullets and killing a dog that bit him has been sentenced to six months in jail.

Sixty-one-year-old James Skiman was taken into custody immediately following his sentencing Wednesday by Justice of the Peace Tom Perkins in Minden.

The Gardnerville Record-Courier reports a consecutive six-month jail term was suspended for two years.

Skiman pleaded guilty in February to misdemeanor charges of unlawful discharge of a firearm and cruelty to animals.

He says he was cleaning a .45-caliber handgun when the dog bit him in the face in November.

Skiman was still shooting at the dog when deputies arrived at his home.
