Reno, NV (KRNV & MyNews4.com) – Great Clips is launching a back to school campaign that benefits local families as well as local teachers when it comes to those expensive school supplies. "Kids need a lot for school and it's hard for them too. So I like to help out as much as I can,” says Kristen Buchanan a first grade teacher in Reno.
Miss Buchanan's classroom is empty now, but come august 11th her classroom will be filled with eager first graders and preparing for that first day takes dedication and money, “I would say a few hundred each year if not more,” says Miss Buchanan.
On average teachers spend about $1,000 of their own money on school supplies each year. If you combine those numbers on a national level; teachers are spending about three billion dollars of their own money each year.
"I mean we do what we need to do for the kids, 'cause we love them and we want them to grow and learn,” says Miss Buchanan.
Miss Buchanan is just starting out and says she is lucky when it comes to her classroom decor and supplies, "I wouldn't be here with all of this without my colleagues and the teacher who retired before me, so I wouldn't, I would be lost.”
However not every teacher walks into a classroom full of their predecessors belongings, so Great Clips salons are stepping up all across the nation.
"The classrooms are so large, so for teachers to have to spend their own money to be able to teach and educate children, it's just too much of a burden,” says Stacey Larsen a manager at Great Clips in Reno.
When you take your kids for their back to school hair cut you can enter to win free school supplies by checking in at any Great Clips location. At the same time you will prompt Great Clips to make a donation to the nonprofit Adopt A Classroom.
