LAS VEGAS (AP) — Researchers say Nevada deaths involving guns have once again outpaced deaths involving motor vehicles, although both types of deaths have declined over a five-year period.

The Violence Policy Center counted 376 gun-related deaths in Nevada in 2011, including 272 suicides and 84 homicides. That compares with 281 motor vehicle-related deaths, including people who were riding in a car or pedestrians hit by a car.

The center's statistics show the two categories were more comparable in 2007, when the state had 414 gun-related deaths and 410 vehicle-related deaths.

Nevada is one of 14 states in which there were more gun-related deaths than vehicle-related deaths in 2011.

The Violence Policy Center calls gun violence a public health crisis and supports stricter gun control.

If you take out Suicide deaths, gun related deaths are way lower than car deaths. Suicide will happen with or without a gun. Look at Japan, they have the highest suicide rate in the world and almost 0 are with a gun as they are outlawed there!

Drowning in swimming pools is still the leading cause of death for children under 4 yet I don't see swimming pools being declared a public health emergency. Perhaps there is no political agenda to be won fighting the swimming pool industry in Nevada.

car deaths were waaaay up in Washoe, Lyon, and Elko Counties; many involved motorcycles-it takes two to tangle. its not about banning guns, just reasonable requirements, just like vehicles

Drugs are banned or illegal and there is NO shortage of them on the street, is there?

How about banning vehicles or certain types of vehicles? The "new" thinking is the object killed, not the human being in charge of it! When Priscilla Ford ran over 23 people on Virginia Street in the 1980's that car should have been banned immediately! I just saw a 1979 Ford LTD last month, the car was just waiting to kill someone. See how idiotic this Gun Control debate is?

Comparing apples to oranges. The statistics should measure like outcomes. For example, comparing deaths between vehicles and guns looking at accidental and purposeful loss of life is considered would be the appropriate use of the statistics. The statistics provided highlight the continued need for crisis intervention where suicide is concerned. On the flip side, when considering accidental deaths, gun deaths are far below vehicle deaths.
