RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- A new haircut can put a spark in your step. Now, a group of area hairstylists might bring that same spark to those in need.
The Haircuts from the Heart event takes place on Wednesday, August 20 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in downtown Reno. St. Vincent's will host the event at 325 Valley Road. Anyone who needs a fresh haircut, but cannot afford one is welcome to take advance of the opportunity.
Anne Schiller is the Director of Program Operations for Catholic Services and St. Vincent's. "The haircuts were our most popular service during our annual Project Homeless Connect which is held each winter."
The brand new event was created after St. Vincent's staff recognized a dire need for this service. Local hairstylist Cadye Allen picked up the challenge. "She is organizing the event which will feature more than a dozen hairstylists." Schiller said. "We're really excited they're willing to come down here and work for free for four hours cutting hair."
Schiller said the haircuts can provide a huge boost to self esteem. "Some people have done a lot with just a haircut. It has helped them get a job and helped them get back on their feet."
Schiller said her staff noticed the difference in attitude after haircuts were provided during the Project Homeless Connect event. "They would just get so excited and happy afterwards. We would talk with people and they would say how wonderful it is because they feel better about themselves."
This event is provided for men, women, children, or seniors. Schiller said anyone who cannot afford a haircut is welcome to get one.
Clients will receive haircuts on a first come, first serve basis. There will also be live performances by the Reno Pops Orchestra. The pampering includes a free meal at St. Vincent's Dining Room from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
