Helpful tips heading into record setting heat wave

RENO, Nev. (KRNV & -- Blazing temperatures are expected to shatter records the next few days in the Silver State.

Excessive heat warnings through the central and southern part of the state go into effect Thursday.

Specifically for Western Nevada record temperatures are likely to kick in Friday through Tuesday, hitting and staying in triple digits.

As the area catapults for record temperatures the National Weather Service provides some helpful tips on staying cool.

-Drink plenty of water

-Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day

-Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun

-Check on the elderly

-Remember to leave pets in a cool place with plenty of water

Also, health officials suggest not drinking alcohol or caffeine in access because both can cause dehydration.
