RENO, NEV. (KRNV & Mynews4.com)--Keeping up with Jones' can be fun and challenging, but it can also be dangerous. ER nurses at St. Mary's say they've seen more patients in the emergency room with injuries related to holiday decorating.
It's not worth taking that risk if you can't do it safely, it's not worth having that extra light on that extra special spot on your house. It's not worth it to your family and it's certainly not worth it to our community," says Erin Madewell, a RN at St. Mary's.
Madewell says there has been increase in the number of patients inside the ER with injuries related to falling off a ladder or slipping on an icy sidewalk.
"Generally when people are outside hanging decorations, they're not falling on something soft like a mattress or carpet. When you're outside, you're falling on either ice on hard concrete or on frozen ground ,and head injuries can be very serious," says Madewell.
There are some ways to prevent an injury, Madewell recommends wearing shoes with good tread and not stepping on a ladder that has any moisture on it.
"A slip and a fall from a ladder can be fatal, this is a very serious injury. It can as minor as a sprained ankle or it can be very serious. It's something we take very seriously here, and it's something for people to take very seriously at home," says Madewell.
