RENO, Nev. (Mynews4.com & KRNV) - Members of the 1-189th unit are back. They were deployed as aviation support for air assault missions throughout Afghanistan.
The last time these National Guard men and women were here in Nevada, was deployment day nearly one year ago. Staff Sgt. Steven Watson reunited with his family today. "It's amazing how much has changed in a year," said Watson.
February 28, 2012 was a tough day for the Hults family who had to see their son Colton off for his first deployment. Today, was a much happier day. "There's going to be a big barbecue tonight," said David Hults, Colton's father. "That sounds really good after the food I've eaten in the last 11 months," said Colton.
For one family it was not just a reunion, it was an introduction. Captain Trevor Weaver met his 8-month old son Conner for the first time today. "It is awesome, just awesome," said Capt. Weaver.
In August of 2012, one of the unit's chinooks was destroyed during a hard landing, but luckily no guardsmen were seriously injured.
