RENO, Nev. (AP) — Sparks police say a Washoe County sheriff's deputy shot and wounded an inmate at a hospital last month after a scuffle down two flights of stairs when he tried to escape.

The inmate who was being treated Oct. 19 at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center broke free from the deputy and made it to an elevator entrance before he was shot in the leg.

The inmate has since been booked on additional charges related to the attempted escape and altercation with the deputy.

Sparks Police Department is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. A final report will be submitted to the Washoe County district attorney's office for review.

Police say the deputy was treated for minor injuries and placed on routine paid administrative leave.
