CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The number of Nevadans filing initial claims for jobless benefits rebounded in October after reaching a five-year low the month earlier.

The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation says Wednesday about 18,500 initial claims were filed last month, compared with 17,500 in October 2011. It's also a big jump from September 2012, when less than 14,000 claims were filed.

Officials say the new numbers are skewed because September had only 19 working days, while October had 22 and offered more opportunities to file for unemployment. They also say October typically begins a seasonal jump in claims that lasts through winter.

Initial claims are still well below their peak of more than 34,000 in December 2008.

Nevada has had the nation's highest jobless rate since May 2010.
