CARSON CITY, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- Area golfers will be flocking to Carson City to hit the links this morning with hopes of sending the next round of Veterans to Washington D.C.
The first annual Kilroy Classic will tee off at the Silver Oak Golf Club in the capital city in a very unique way. Retired Vietnam Veteran pilot Mike Willow with the Cactus Air Force will fly a Cobra helicopter and land at the golf course to signal the start of the four person tournament.
Over 120 golfers are signed up for the tournament that is free for veterans and active duty service men and women. Program Director Jon Yuspa tells us the response from Veterans, especially the Cactus Air Force, has been overwhelming.
"We asked the Cactus Air Force if they'd like to bring out some of their equipment, then it turned into doing a fly-over, and when I asked to take pictures it turned into, 'Let's do a training a day ahead and fly the mission,'" Yuspa said.
Registration starts at 7 a.m. with breakfast and golfing will begin at 8:30 a.m.
The event will be open for spectators to come out and share stories with Veterans, take in the sights and support the Honor Flight program in northern Nevada.
Honor Flight also happens to be one of the most successful programs for Veterans in the nation.
