Kyburz fire at 615 Acres; 95% contained

UPDATE - JUL. 11 - 10:36AM - The fire is now 95 percent contained and full containment is expected by tomorrow afternoon.

UPDATE - JUL. 10 - 10:18AM - The Kyburz Fire is now 80 percent contained.

UPDATE - 11:37AM - The fire is now at 615 acres, according to Eldorado National Forest.

UPDATE - 10:25AM - According to CAL Fire and the U.S. Forest Service, there are no evacuation orders in place.

Ground crews and four helicopters are on scene, and 864 personnel are fighting the fire.

Highway 50 is open. Traffic is being escorted though the area via one-way traffic control from 5.5 miles east of Riverton to 1.5 miles west of Kyburz.

Two outbuildings have sustained damage.

The fire is still at 160 acres, but is now 40% contained.

UPDATE - 10:54PM - Kyburz fire has been downgraded to 160 acres. It is still 0% contained.

UPDATE - 9:36PM - According to the incident commander the Kyburz fire is now 600 acres in size and it is 0% contained at this time. CHP has re-opened Highway 50, but there are major delays.

UPDATE - 4:30PM - According to the U.S. Forest Service, the fire, now being called the Kyburz Fire, is 40-50 acres in size. Eight air tankers and five helicopters have been assigned to the fire.

UPDATE - 3:43PM - Lake Tahoe News is reporting a U.S. Forest Service truck on its way to the fire has crashed with an RV.

According to Jeff Gartner with the California Highway Patrol, one person was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital for evaluation.

Lake Tahoe News reports the Forest Service truck, according to a witness, had lights and sirens on when it entered the intersection on the red light. The RV was towing a vehicle and drove into a ditch.

UPDATE - 3:05PM - According to Cal-Trans, the fire started in a rural section of the highway between White Hall and Kyburz. CHP is reporting that the fire started when a vehicle blew a tire.

Cal-Trans says the fire is spreading east.

U.S. Highway 50 in the Sierra has been closed because of a the fire is producing heavy smoke, making the area unsafe for motorists.

UPDATE - 2:42PM - According to KCRA, eastbound traffic is being held at Sly Park Road in Pollock Pines and westbound traffic is being held in the town of Meyers, just west of South Lake Tahoe, Caltrans said in a news release.

UPDATE - 2:20PM - From KCRA: The fire is a grass fire burning in El Dorado County that started around 12:40pm and has burned 12 acres.

The highway is closed between Sly Park and Meyers, Caltrans said via Twitter. However, CHP officials said they are working to open one westbound and one eastbound lane. At this time, there is no estimated time for reopening.

Crews have shut off power in communities along Highway 50 from White Hall to Twin Bridges Camp.

RIVERTOWN, Calif. (KRNV & - US Highway 50 is closed 5.6 miles east of Rivertown to 1.5 miles west of Kyburz due to a wildland fire.

Rivertown is about 38 miles west of downtown South Lake Tahoe.
