CARSON CITY, Nev. ( & KRNV) - After being a no-show to a news conference earlier this week Assemblyman Steven Brooks, D-Las Vegas, made a brief appearance in Carson City today.   He  stopped at the Legislative Building for less than thirty minutes.

Lawmakers were at the Legislative Building today for a budget subcommittee meeting.  Brooks sits on that committee along with Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick, D- Las Vegas. Brooks allegedly threatened Speaker Kirkpatrick and was arrested on Saturday January 19, 2013 and found with a loaded gun in his car.  Legislative police presence in and around the budget meeting was increased.  Lawmakers say the situation is not going unnoticed. "There's a bit of tension and worry," said Senator Debbie Smith. "But mostly people want to just get down to business," she said.

Majority Leader William Horne called the issue with Brooks a distraction, but says he does not fear for his safety.  "We want to make sure everyone here can do their jobs. I have all the confidence in the world we can do that whether or not Mr. Brooks is present," said Horne.

Brooks never attempted to attend the meeting.  According to Rick Combs, Director of the Legislative Counsel Bureau, Brooks was in town to make living arrangements and sign a lease on an apartment for session. Combs says legislative police provided transportation.  Combs says that is typical procedure if a lawmaker does not have a vehicle.

Brooks left wearing a beige hood over his head and would not answer any questions.  According to Combs, Brooks is not expected to be back in Carson City until Legislative Session.
