CARSON CITY, Nev. (Mynews4.com & KRNV)- "I can't go into detail but we feel comfortable that what we're doing is appropriate for the level of concern in the building," said Rick Combs, Nevada Legislative Counsel Bureau Director.
Why the high level of concern? Embattled Assemblyman Steven Brooks is expected to be in attendance on Monday for opening day ceremonies at the Nevada Legislature. Brooks was arrested two weeks ago for allegedly threatening Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick, (D) Las Vegas. When he was arrested police found a gun and ammunition in his vehicle.
Lawmakers will not be the only ones in attendance on Monday. Each Legislator is given the opportunity to invite friends and family. Brooks has requested 20 seats. According to Combs, the number of seats a lawmaker is granted depends on seniority and availability.
One thing the public will notice on Monday, an increase of Legislative Police. "We're just trying to look at this as one of those instances where we need some extra precautions in place," said Combs.
According to Majority Leader William Horne, Brooks was offered a chance to take some time off. "We've extended to Mr. Brooks an offer to take a leave of absence, take the time you need to get better. And we've been rebuffed," said Horne.
