ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. ( & KRNV) -- Your right to know is at the center of a lawsuit filed against a small sewer district at Lake Tahoe.

The conservative group Nevada Policy Research Institute has filed suit in the Ninth Judicial Court in Minden, asking the court to order the Tahoe-Douglas Sewer District to disclose its employee compensation information.

NPRI is behind the website, which posts salary and compensation information of Nevada public employees. "To date, more than 100 public agencies have provided NPRI salary information under the Nevada Public Records Act," Chief Legal Counsel Joseph Becker said.

NPRI said in a news release this week the website is dedicated to serving Nevada's public by providing easily accessible and searchable compensation records for state and local government employees.

Becker said the District is refusing to comply with the Nevada Public Records Act. He said NPRI requested the salary information around the beginning of the year. In April, a certified letter was sent demanding the information again and warning the District NPRI would file a lawsuit if the request continued to be denied.

Janet Murphy is the District Administrator. She said she could not comment and referred News 4 to the District's attorney, Mike Johnson. Johnson said he has not seen the lawsuit yet and could not provide further comment.

The District is very small. It serves around 1,500 customers in Zephyr Cove and has five employees.
