CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers are asking the state Supreme Court for more time to answer claims by embattled Assemblyman Steven Brooks that he is entitled to be seated in the state Assembly.
In a motion filed late Friday, the Legislature's top lawyer says Brooks hasn't complied with a previous order to provide additional documentation supporting his argument that the Legislature lacks authority to put him on leave.
It also says the Legislature's legal staff is overwhelmed and is urgently needed to complete bill drafting in time for March 18 and March 25 deadlines.
The Supreme Court ordered a response to Brooks' filing by March 18. The Legislature is asking for an extension until March 27.
Brooks was put on leave last month following two arrests and hospitalization for a mental evaluation.
