LAS VEGAS (AP) — A former state senator says Nevada should tax mining and corporations to raise revenue to improve education and provide adequate social services.
Sheila Leslie, who lost the November election to Republican state Sen. Greg Brower, has become a voice for progressive activists.
On Wednesday night she was to give her take on the "state of the state" during a speech in Las Vegas.
Leslie has been a vocal critic of Nevada's mining industry and tax structure.
Her speech comes one week before Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval gives his biennial address to lawmakers in Carson City.
In prepared remarks, Leslie says Nevada's tax policies have created a "Donner Party mentality of primitive survival" that harms children, the poor, communities and economic development.
