CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Some southern Nevada lawmakers had little sympathy for rural higher education advocates who asked for more money and time to prepare for a new funding formula that will shift money to Las Vegas campuses.
In testimony Tuesday before a money subcommittee, critics argued the new formula will gut programs in the rural areas.
Under a plan approved by the Board of Regents, funding will be based on how many class credits students complete. For University of Nevada, Reno and community colleges in northern Nevada, the shift will mean a loss of around $13 million that will go to schools in southern Nevada.
Advocates also urged lawmakers to restore money to the University of Nevada, Reno's Cooperative Extension Service.
The service has already been cut $5.5 million.
