RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- One Reno native is willing his way to the top and has earned himself a spot in the south west regional competition this weekend for the CrossFit Games. Thousands compete in the CrossFit Open, few get to move on to regionals. Currently local athlete Will Dermody is ranked 18th entering the Southwest Regional competition.
"So blessed and so fortunate to be around people who constantly remind me to set those expectations myself, those limitations pretty high and try and achieve that and that's invaluable mentally," Dermody says.
Although Dermody has a gym of his own, CrossFit 4500, he coaches and trains at UNR CrossFit located in Lombardi Recreation and Wellness. Dermody credits his success to the UNR CrossFit community and culture among the students and coaches.
"The mutual wiliness to suffer is always so inspiring. Being a part of a community like a CrossFit gym and it's also really humbling," Dermody says.
Director of Campus Recreation and Wellness Jim Fitzsimmons trains with Dermody daily, and as the UNR CrossFit founding father, sees something special in the young athlete.
"It's kind of fun working out with him because he is a ferocious competitor," Fitzsimmons says.
"Will has it in him to finish in the top 10 and go to the games. He does. Last year he finished 52nd, this year he's going in in 18th place. He's better he's stronger, he's faster than he was last year."
Dermody will not be traveling to Salt Lake City for regionals alone. He will be accompanied by the close nitch of Crossfit comrades who've trained with him day in and day out. The group says they are looking forward to the trip.
Competition begins Friday morning, May 30th and will last three days with a variety of workouts each day. For more information in regards to the Games click here.
