SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (KRNV&MyNews4.com) -- A local family owned business is getting a boost from a national website.

South Lake Tahoe's Alder Inn is a winner of a Trip Advisor award for customer service.

"We just had a little idea to open a small hotel and we've just worked really hard at it," said owner Layni Davis.

Layni and her husband Chad took over the Alder Inn on Valentine's Day in 2010, after scouring the country for the perfect spot.

"We came to Tahoe and fell in love with it," Chad said.

Three years and a complete renovation later, their inn is ranked number one in South Lake Tahoe on TripAdvisor.com.

"We feel really good that we've taken an old property and we've turned it into something fabulous that people really like," Layni said.

Customer reviews won them the site's 2013 Travelers' Choice Award.

"Your goal is to give them a good experience," Chad said. "It's gratifying and also humbling to know that we've achieved that."

The small inn hosts only two dozen rooms - the Davises say it feels like home.

No two rooms are the same. It's the little details that they say customers appreciate.

"We just try to give people the feeling that we would want when we go on vacation," Layni said.

"We try to give more of a Tahoe experience to people versus just a night's stay," Chad said.

So they recommend everything from restaurants to hiking spots, sharing their local favorites with their guests.

"We call it our big adventure," Layni said.

An adventure that's better because they're doing it together.

"I married my best friend and we definitely can work well together," Chad said.

So far more than 200 TripAdvisor.com users agree.
