Reno, NV (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- Local marriage and family therapist Cheryl Erwin says it’s time to reboot your relationship with your children.
“The screen is being substituted for the relationship,” says Cheryl Erwin.
Cheryl says parents are using technology as a way to deal with their children, rather than work through the issue their child may be having.
“My colleagues and I call them shut up devices, so baby fusses or cries or does something the parent doesn’t want to deal with and they hand over the phone instead of using the relationship to teach, which is actually what children need,” says Cheryl Erwin.
As technology advertisements consume us, Cheryl says there’s something parents of infants or toddlers may not realize, “The American Academy of Pediatrics says no screen time at all, zero, from birth to age 2, none!” Instead talk to your children,
read to your children or play games with them, says Cheryl.
However, as your children grow and technology becomes a necessary part of life Cheryl says don’t forget about the relationship, “What parents need to focus on is having a healthy balance between tech and genuine human connection with their children.”
How can you connect? Cheryl suggests a tech garage, “During the family dinner, after bedtime, when the family is doing an activity everybody’s phone goes away and often the people who struggle the most are the adults, not the kids. If you’re going to limit screen time and you’re going to limit access to technology parents have to be role models.
