RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- The holidays aren't the same for our soldiers serving overseas, but the Blue Star Mothers and local volunteers are trying to make them a little brighter.

They're sending something special to soldiers like Diane Wood's 20-year-old son who is deployed with the Army Afghanistan.

"We're not sure exactly where he is," Wood said. "We haven't been in touch with him for about two weeks."

"It's a sacrifice to be away from home, and to know that your sacrifice means something to the people back at home is everything to our service men and women," said Nevada Air National Guard Lt. Col. Joann Meacham.

It also means something to the people who are putting them together.

"We've invited family members of deployed military so that they can see and experience the support and love that our community provides them," Meacham said.

The carepackages contain things like food and toiletries that most people wouldn't want under their trees, but sometimes the little things mean the most to our troops.

"For them to get the gift-wrapped items is really special for them," said Paula Fleming.

"Just having something from home that reminds you of home," Wood said.

In addition to things like snacks and playing cards all of the boxes also have notes, christmas cards and even messages on the outside to let the troops know that people back here in Reno are thinking of them.

"I'm writing happy thoughts and I'm thanking them for all that they do," said 9-year-old Savannah Callahan. The boxes she decorated along with the rest will go out to more than 100 troops - all containing warm wishes from the people who packed them.

"I hope you guys are okay when you come back," Callahan said.

"Thank you for your service. Thank you for your sacrifice," Meacham said.

If you'd like to help out the Blue Star Mothers they'll be wrapping gifts at Barnes and Noble during the holiday season to raise funds. For more information email Paula Fleming at pfleming03@sbcglobal.net.
