ELKO, Nev. (AP, KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- Nevada's two Republican lieutenant governor candidates appealed in Elko for primary support from the party, with each telling northeast Nevada GOP members they are better qualified to serve than the other.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1fKXTGj ) there were no fireworks during a Friday night forum featuring state Sen. Mark Hutchison and former state Sen. Sue Lowden in northeast Nevada.

The race is important this year because of speculation that Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval could run against U.S. Sen. Harry Reid in 2016.

If Sandoval was elected to the Senate, the lieutenant governor would become governor.

Lowden says her experience as a legislator and businesswoman make her qualified to serve.

Hutchinson says he'd continue to protect Nevada's constitutional rights like he did as the attorney heading the state's challenge to the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act.

Wasn't Sue Lowden the former candidate whose alternative to Medicare was to offer the medical caregivers their fees in chickens?
