UPDATE - 2PM - Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says Grimes remains in custody charged with murder, $250,000 bail, and is set for his court appearance on Feb. 7 at 8 a.m..
While the incident remains under investigation, witnesses have provided information that the altercation may have been sparked by a domestic argument following a child custody exchange, Furlong says.
Following a confrontation inside the residence, Grimes and Lay continued the incident into the street in front of the residence.
Furlong says Grimes allegedly showed a weapon and shot Lay one time in the chest, and then fled the area.
After about one hour, Grimes contacted the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and turned himself into authorities. A short time later, Grimes arrived at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and turned himself over to arresting officers.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- A man has been arrested as a suspect in the death of James Lay, 32, who was found dead Feb. 3 in Carson City.
At approximately 8:35 p.m. Sunday night, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office says they responded to a report of a man shot at the 900 block of West Washington Street. Deputies found James Lay, 32, at his residence with a gunshot wound to the chest. Lay was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police say the suspect was identified by witnesses as David Grimes, 32. Grimes was taken into custody voluntarily at by Carson City Sheriffs Deputies.
