UPDATE - 10:24A - SEPT. 24, 2013 - The suspect inside the home has been identified as Edward Joseph Long. He was making suicidal and homicidal statements, according to Sparks Police.

School Police were notified to insure children from nearby schools were not allowed in the area. Officers initially attempted contact with Long by phone. Long answered his phone, did not speak with officers, hung his phone up and would not answer other calls.

At approximately 3:30pm, the Sparks Police Department "Bearcat" armored vehicle was driven to the front of the residence to attempt contact with Long via the PA system. During this time, officers learned that Long was threatening to burn his house down. With this new information, officers began evacuating nearby houses and the Sparks Fire Department was contacted to stand by in the area.

At approximately 4:30pm, Long could be heard yelling at the officers from a window. Officers could not distinguish what he was saying so they continued requesting Long to come outside.

At approximately 4:50pm, over two hours after officers initially arrived, Long exited the front door of his residence. He was cooperative with officers and was taken into custody. Officers cleared the residence to ensure the safety of anyone else who may have been inside. Long admitted he owned a shotgun and handgun and allowed officers to search for the firearms. A shotgun and loaded magazine for a handgun were recovered, however the handgun was not.

Long was booked at the Washoe County Sheriff's Office for Threats/Harassment and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. His bail was set at $15,000 cash only.

If you have any information regarding this case please contact the Sparks Police Department at 775-353-2231 or Secret Witness.
