Man killed in officer-involved shooting identified

RENO, Nev. (KRNV & -- Reno Police have identified the man killed in an officer-involved shooting.

Layne Michael Campbell, 40, was killed around 6:30 on Friday, Jun. 7 on Scorpio Circle. Deputies from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office had responded to a call from a citizen who said that an unknown suspicious male was on his property and attempting to force entry into his residence.

As they arrived in the area, deputies located an adult male resembling the description of the suspicious subject near the complainant’s residence. While investigating the suspicious male’s activities in the area, the two responding deputies were involved in a shooting.

There were no injuries to any of the deputies. However, the suspicious male suffered gunshot injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The male subsequently succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The two Deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on routine administrative leave, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation. Washoe County Sheriff's Office says this is a routine and normal occurrence in any case where an officer or deputy has discharged a firearm and one or more bullets strike a human being.

did the officer need to shoot? it does not say the man was armed in any way.
