Reno, NV (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- The Maytan Music Center will be closing after 54 years of business in Reno.
It’s a place that long time Reno residents remember getting their first instrument or their first music lesson, but after all their efforts
to make it work, the Maytan’s are saying goodbye.
“One of the biggest things I’m going to miss is the students who come through, because they‘re special,” says Marianne Maytan.
Local music teacher, Jose Flores has been shopping at the Maytan Music Center since 1983 and is sad to see it go, “We wish the Maytan’s well, but we’re sad to see it end. It’s the end of a great era.”
It was an era that began in 1959 with two professional musicians, Steve and Iris Maytan. After Steve passed away in 1997, Iris and the rest of the family kept the store and the music alive.
Marianne Maytan, one of four Maytan children running the music center says it’s not easy to say goodbye, “It’s, um heartbreaking is the word. There are a lot of memories, there’s been a lot of students come through here.”
The Maytan’s have made many efforts to continue on, but the economic downturn and increased competition has changed the marketplace, “We’re sorry to go, but that’s the way it is, everything has to go away sometime, and it’s our time,” says Marianne Maytan.
While the Maytan Music Center will close its doors in the coming months, the passion and skills housed there will continue to impact our community as the instructors go on to teach in other studios across Reno.
The Maytan’s are selling everything in their store directly to the public at prices below wholesale cost and those prices are effective
now, January 15, 2014.
