RENO, Nev. ( & KRNV) -- The University of Nevada School of Medicine will host students from Proctor C. Hug High School and their families on Aug. 14 at a welcoming “scrubs” ceremony for those teens entering the Health Science Academy this school year.

The ceremony, where Hug High students will receive a set of doctor’s scrubs to welcome them into the academy, will begin at 6 p.m. in the David Lupan Auditorium of the School of Medicine’s Center for Molecular Medicine, located on the north end of the University of Nevada, Reno campus, off of Enterprise Road.

Tim Baker, M.D., Dean of the medical school, will welcome the teens to kick-off the program. About 30 Hug High students will enter the academy, now in its third year.

The Health Science Academy at Hug High fosters a challenging learning environment allowing students to explore health careers, post-secondary education, volunteer work experience and internships while completing rigorous courses increasing college preparedness. Medical and health service and other related themes are integrated into the traditional high school curriculum with a focus on hands-on experiences facilitated by School of Medicine faculty and students, according to a University of Nevada School of Medicine press release.

The School of Medicine offers Health Science Academy students activities to learn more about health occupations including shadowing opportunities, tours of medical school facilities, a chance to further develop problem-solving skills and practice “thinking like a doctor” through direct contact with medical students and faculty.
