Sparks, NV (KRNV & MyNews4.com)-- A new bus service is rolling into the Reno-Sparks area offering riders a chance to travel to the Bay Area starting for just one dollar, but how safe is this discount bus ride?News 4 uncovered a recent National Transportation Safety Board report on curbside motorcoach safety. The report finds "curbside carriers have higher fatal accident rates... compared with scheduled coventional carriers."
Megabus is considered a curbside motorcoach because in some cases, like in Sparks, there will not be an actual bus stop. There will only be a location for pick-up and drop-off.
The report also states "the findings should be interpreted as an indication of general safety rather than an evaluation of individual operators." And according to Senior VP of Safety for Megabus and Coach USA Don Carmichael, megabus operates to a higher standard than other carriers.
Megabus.com received a "Satisfactory" rating by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. A satisfactory rating means that "records indicate no evidence of substantial non-compliance with safety requirements."
