Sparks, NV (KRNV & A new bus service is rolling into the Reno-Sparks area offering riders a chance to travel to the Bay Area starting for just one dollar, but how safe is this discount bus ride?

News 4 uncovered a recent National Transportation Safety Board report on curbside motorcoach safety. The report finds "curbside carriers have higher fatal accident rates... compared with scheduled coventional carriers."

Megabus is considered a curbside motorcoach because in some cases, like in Sparks, there will not be an actual bus stop.  There will only be a location for pick-up and drop-off.

The report also states "the findings should be interpreted as an indication of general safety rather than an evaluation of individual operators."  And according to Senior VP of Safety for Megabus and Coach USA Don Carmichael, megabus operates to a higher standard than other carriers. received a "Satisfactory" rating by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.  A satisfactory rating means that "records indicate no evidence of substantial non-compliance with safety requirements."

If this is a Coach USA company, they have a really good safety program, for both divers and coaches. I managed the Elko operation for Coach USA that transported mine employees for 2 years and our safety and maint. record was always excellent. we were inspected by DPS monthly at random days and time and always passed.

Thamks for the reality check. I have already booked ewo one-dollar rides. They are focusing on name recognition and preventing ticket scalping mostly. Note that many of the bus mishaps are on Gambling junkets and tours, where operators/equi[pment are shoddy. But I-80 is inherently risky.
