YERINGTON, Nev. (AP) — Despite strong opposition from residents, Lyon County commissioners have approved land-use changes that will allow a company to pursue mining exploration close to the historic town of Silver City.

Commissioners' Thursday votes in favor of master plan and zoning changes sought by Comstock Mining Inc. came after county planning commissioners recommended denial of the requests last month.

The action, which affects 87 acres on the south end of Silver City, allows the company to move forward with exploration to determine the area's mining potential. Comstock Mining would have to apply for a special-use permit in order to mine.

The 4.5-hour hearing drew some 250 people.

Silver City residents said open-pit mining will harm their quality of life and property values, while supporters said it will provide an economic boost.

Are these the Lyon County Commissioners bought-and-paid-for by Comstock Mining? How much does a commissioner go for these days?
