LAS VEGAS, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- The mother of former Nevada Senator John Ensign has died.
An obituary in the Las Vegas Review-Journal says Sharon Lee Ensign, 75, was surrounded by family when she died at home last week. A funeral is scheduled for Thursday.
Ensign was born in Carson City. She had three children with her first husband before marrying Mike Ensign, who adopted her children and became a casino executive in Las Vegas.
The couple came under scrutiny during a scandal that led to John Ensign's resignation in 2011. The couple paid $96,000 to John Ensign's mistress and campaign treasurer, Cynthia Hampton, in 2008.
This morning, Governor Brian Sandoval issued the following statement after learning of the death of Sharon Ensign:
“Kathleen and I were saddened to hear of the passing of Sharon Ensign. Born in Carson City, Sharon was a devoted wife, mother and a proud Nevadan. Kathleen and I extend our deepest sympathies to Sharon’s husband, Mike, and the Ensign family.”
