RENO, Nev. ( & KRNV) -- While ringing in the New Year, a number of viewers witnessed strange UFO's in the sky. There were similar sighting in four separate California cities.

Lots of calls were made, from the FAA to the military, law enforcement and even an organization that investigates UFO sightings. One thing is for certain, these stories generate a lot of interest.

People in Hollywood, Stockton, Sacramento and Auburn all reported seeing strange, orange lights in the sky. After the first story aired, several of our viewers called or emailed saying they also witnessed an unusual, orange glowing light in the sky.

One location was near Spanish Springs, even though one viewer reported the sighting from south Reno.

At the Reno FAA tower, neither controllers on-duty, nor a review of the radar, showed anything other than routine aircraft traffic. We also checked with the military and law enforcement, as well as an organization that investigates UFO sightings. What we uncovered may have some "earthly explanations" for both the California sightings, as well as the ones locally.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office confirmed that they were flying the Raven helicopter in the area, around the same time as the unusual sightings.

Mark Easter is a Field Investigator with, and he had a partial explanation for some of the California sightings. "This looks like a Chinese lantern. You can buy them on the internet, and you put a candle in them, and the heat causes them to rise."

So did they see Raven's bright search light, or was it a Chinese lantern? Easter says if you see something you think is strange, report it on the Mutual UFO Network website.

Henderson, Nevada On New Year Eve January 1st 2014 between 12:01 and 12:05 we were in our bedroom looking out at the sky and taking in the fireworks over Las Vegas both on TV and out the window. We witnessed two bright orange balls of fire cross the sky. The objects came from the direction of Primm towards Las Vegas. I would estimate the speed at 200 to 400 mph and the altitude was from 2000 to 8000 feet. One first crossed the sky and we watched it go up into the sky and disappear. Approximately three minutes later a second fire ball following the identical flight path repeated. I would estimate the size of each object to have been 10 to 20 feet in diameter. The flames were clear to see. The whole object was a glow. The flames were going up, the flames were not training behind. We were thinking that it was a new fireworks device in the form of a drone because it was flying. It was not shooting across the sky; it was floating across the sky. The closes distance the second ORB came was approximately 1 - 2 miles. I was mesmerized as I watched the energy inside the orb. The flames covered the whole top and were even pulsing flames maybe 5 feet high off the top of the orb. The phenomena rose above our home and disappeared. We are very concerned as for sure though 100’s of reports came in form California, they were all reported as lights in the sky. In fact, we saw the objects…There are three pictures below, the fist one taken with an I phone normal range. The second is blurred; the third is a blow up of the first image done on my computer without any enhancement.

roseanya. They can out run us. Any missile would not even touch them. In 1965 when I was 13 I saw something at night I will not forget. Something streaked across the night sky in a Z pattern and then zipped UP and disappeared. We didn't have ANY aircraft at that time that could travel that fast. It was like the character Zorro actually writing in the night sky. This was in the middle of the summer time in Bellingham Washington. Since then I knew we are not alone. A lot of other people saw it too including my parents which one of them was in the Air Force at the time. Made him a believer.

People were releasing the Chinese Lanterns in NW Reno that night during the fireworks. They would float for a few minutes then typically catch in fire and fall. Reno Fire may want to release a safety statement about that since things have been so dry lately.

Years back I worked with military jet fighters on 5 minute alert and the pilots KNEW UFO's. They thought it interesting that the UFO's would meet them--we had a revolving weekly schedule and did air-to-air refueling in the same areas week after week. And when we had nuke's on board, the UFO's knew it....
