RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- Record breaking temperatures earlier this week and signals of spring are emerging are causing bears to wake up from hibernation, and residents should be aware.
The Nevada Department of Wildlife has come in contact with a few yearlings already this year.
Officals want to remind people who live in bear country to be aware.
In Truckee, fines have been upped for people who allow bears, raccoons and other animals easy access to garbage cans.
NDOW has been under scrutiny this week facing allegations they euthanized a bear cub last weekend. The department says they did not euthanize the bear, but it died during capture because it was unhealthy. They had intended to bring the bear to a rehabilitation center.
