RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- The Food Bank of Northern Nevada has been teaming up with local organizations to fight hunger for more than 30 years.
Now local law enforcement is helping them through a brand new food drive that turns an NVH truck into a food collecting machine.
"It's a half-ton truck, but I think we could easily put more than a thousand pounds of food in here," said Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen.
Allen said he's happy to help the food bank collect food for the 92 thousand Nevadans they help each month. "It's just one way of our troopers giving back to the community, of our agency standing up and helping out when we need to," Allen said.
Local businesses like KOH rado, Papa Murphy's Pizza and U.S. Firearms Academy are also helping out with the event.
Food bank marketing director Jocelyn Lantrip said it's heartwarming to see the response - especially this time of year.
"The winter is a tough time of year for a lot of people," she said. "The holiday season there's a lot of different things pulling at their budget, so food is even harder to come by."
Cram the Cruiser is one of more than a hundred food drives happening during the holidays to help the Food Bank of Northern Nevada collect the non-perishable items they need for this busy season.
"Protein items are the things that we need the most, so peanut butter, tuna, beans," Lantrip said. "We also need rice, pasta, fruits and vegetables."
Lantrip said an easy way to choose items to donate is to buy extra of the things you like.
"Donate things that your family would want," she said. "It's a pretty good rule of thumb."
If you couldn't make it out today there will be many more opportunities to help out the food bank and other charities this holiday season.
