CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Supporters of an initiative petition to expand background checks to nearly all gun sales in Nevada will soon begin gathering signatures after claiming a court victory.

Carson District Judge James Wilson on Friday struck down most of the arguments of the Nevada Firearms Coalition over the wording of the petition. The group opposes the petition.

Wilson ordered a minor wording change noting there would be criminal penalties for failure to obey the proposed new law, but rejected other wording changes sought by the firearms coalition.

Supporters say the proposal, spurred by Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval's veto of similar legislation passed by the 2013 Legislature, would require background checks for private gun sales.

If the group gathers 101,667 signatures by Nov. 11, state lawmakers then would vote to approve or reject the petition in 2015. If rejected, the measure would go to Nevada voters in 2016.

Why doesn't this group Advocate for a ban on video game and television violence? Social destruction at the family level and how we all treat each other on a daily basis has everything to do with what is happening in our country and community. You can not blame the "object" that the human being is "in charge of". What next, cars, trucks, bat's, a knife? Drugs are illegal and there is no shortage of them on the streets is there? This is unconstitutional and those bringing this to court should be brought up on treason charges. Thomas Jefferson was so concerned about this he wanted the right to bear arms to be the 1st Amendment to the Bill of Rights but allowed his fellow drafters post freedom of speech to be the first. God help us all...............

This is just another attempt by the socialist Kalifornicators who come to our state and try to push their agenda on good law abiding gun owners in Nevada. GO BACK to Kalifornia or mother Russia. We don't need your socialist dictatorship in this country.

violation of the 2nd amendment.. the right shall not be infringed. the right to own and bear arms. FBI stats already prove gun laws don't prevent crime because criminals don't register their guns nor have any regard for laws. with all the criminal illegals coming in.. let the fun begin

Judge James E. Wilson is a very very corrupt Mormon judge who has a long list of backdating court filings for his Mormon friends in the Carson City court.

What will it take for these gun control bone-heads to understand that ANY gun control laws they pass will only affect legal, law abiding gun buyers and owners adversely-the people who commit crimes and use guns to kill innocent people DON'T FOLLOW LAWS! Never mind-they understand this fact completely. As is typical with the low information crowd, anything that doesn't fit their subversive,anti-American agenda, they simply refuse to acknowledge. Head-in-the-sand Syndrome...

People have their own agenda on this one. I would like to know how they plan to enforce it or is their only solution is to make a law out of it? How does a common person get a background check on someone? Will they be making a way for us to access the database? They cant because that would set people up for identity theft. Go to a gun store and have them lose a sale so you can sell your pfoperty? I wouldnt allow that if I owned a shop and wouldnt expect one to do it either.
