CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The names of a Las Vegas search-and-rescue officer and two other officers have been added to a memorial in Carson City honoring law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

Gov. Brian Sandoval praised the trio during a ceremony Thursday at the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial on the Capitol grounds.

Las Vegas officer David Vanbuskirk died last July while trying to rescue a stranded hiker on a Mount Charleston ledge northwest of Las Vegas.

Police say the 36-year-old Vanbuskirk had strapped the hiker into a harness and signaled to his crew to hoist them both up when he somehow fell to his death in the canyon below.

The hiker was pulled to the helicopter and wasn't injured.

Southern Pacific police officer Jose Sancedo was fatally shot by assailants in 1937 at the Sparks rail yard, while Southern Pacific officer John Montague was struck and killed by a switch engine while on patrol at the Paradise yard.
