RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- The National Championship Air Races are roaring across the skies of Reno. Planes started racing today out at the Reno-Stead Airport.

This is the 50th year for the National Championship Air Races and they're expecting well over 200,000 people over the course of the next five days.

The racing got underway earlier today with early qualifier heats in biplane and Formula 1 racing.

Another exciting thing that wowed the crowd today was Jet Man. He was out here practicing just after 1 this afternoon and he will be performing again tomorrow at 1 pm.

Every day during the event, they will honor a different aspect of the races. Race President and CEO Mike Houghton says tomorrow's theme will center around fans and volunteers. Friday, they will honor the military; Saturday they will celebrate race planes and Sunday, they will celebrate champions.

There will be an opening ceremony every day around noon. Tickets can be purchased at the gate and range from $15-30 for adults or $96 for the entire event.
