CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — As the dust begins to settle from a scuffle in the Nevada Legislature over gun control, only two substantial plans remain that would overhaul firearms policy in the state.

Both proposals would restrict access to firearms for the mentally ill, though the Democratic bill, SB221, goes all-in with universal background checks on most transfers of firearms.

SB277 is backed by a Republican and aims to tighten enforcement on existing laws for mentally ill people by making it easier to strip gun rights from a person who refuses treatment.

The fate of both proposals must be decided by a Tuesday deadline, or they will fail.
