RENO, Nev. ( & KRNV) -- Just off the busy street of Longley Lane, a broken window is boarded up at the Nevada Humane Society. The non-profit organization fell victim to an apparent burglary sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning.

The burglar did not make out with what is considered a lot of money, but as a non-profit that relies solely on donations, the Humane Society said it caused more damage than what he or she stole.
"I don't think anybody would have thought that The Nevada Humane Society would be targeted for a burglary," said Kimberly Wade.

Wade is the Senior Manager of Communications. She said staff discovered the double-pane window broken on the clinic side of the building. Once inside, the burglar, or burglars smashed into the donation boxes which are glued to the table and stole more than $100.

Petty cash was also stolen. Nothing else seems to be missing, and no animals were harmed or taken. Wade says the window is estimated to cost $1,000.

Although $100 may not be considered a substantial amount of money, Wade said the Nevada Humane Society relies solely on local and private donations, and is not affiliated with any national organization. So, paired with the cost to fix the window, the losses are greater.

"That money is actually used to provide care for homeless pets and to help people who maybe cannot otherwise afford medical services so it offers them low cost services in our Nevada Humane Society clinic," said Wade.

The Washoe County Sheriff's office is investigating, looking through surveillance footage and are asking for the public's help. Anyone with information that could lead to the suspect are urged to call the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, or Secret Witness at 322-4900.
